A letter is most itself when it is alone. A word is most itself when it is alone. A line is most itself when it is alone. A poem is most itself when it is alone. A collection is most itself when it is alone.
Associations taint and sway. What comes before and after change what that thing is. I do not mean that it becomes worse, only that its color changes. When we write a poem, that poem is what we write. Letters, words, lines are edited and changed to make the poem. They become subservient to the whole. And the bigger the whole is, the further from the initial point we move. So, in a collection, we treat poems like lines or words. Poems are changed for the sake of the whole. There is nothing too pure to be changed. Change has always been a part of the poem. A poem is never done until the last poem is written and the last book or collection edited. When you are dead, a poem is complete. And when your editor is dead, the poem is complete. And when you and your work are forgotten, the poem is complete.
